Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was een van de voornaamste Italiaanse barokcomponisten. Bekijk hier bladmuziek van zijn werken. Zijn wereldberoemde Vier Jaargetijden / Le quattro stagioni vind je hier natuurlijk ook in allerlei versies terug!
Op 25-jarige leeftijd werd Antonio Vivaldi tot priester gewijd. Hij moest het beroep echter na enkele jaren vanwege gezondheidsredenen opgeven. In een meisjesweeshuis in Venetië verdiende hij de kost als leraar voor viool, cello en altviool. Hij wist het schoolorkest, waar hij in 1719 de leiding van overnam, tot landelijke bekendheid te verheffen, waarop ook vele bezoekers uit Europa naar Venetië kwamen om het orkest te kunnen horen.
De vele vioolconcerten waaronder de wereldberoemde Vier jaargetijden / Le quattro stagioni componeerde hij voor dit ensemble. Vivaldi waagde ook een poging om opera’s te componeren. Het succes beleef echter uit, waarna hij rond 1740 besloot Venetië te verlaten om zijn geluk te beproeven in Wenen. Hij stierf daar slechts 10 maanden na aankomst.
Het werk van Vivaldi raakte na zijn dood in vergetelheid. Pas in 1926 werd zijn werk herontdekt. Er volgde uitgebreid onderzoek, waarbij achtereenvolgens 75 psalmzettingen, motetten en cantates werden gevonden.
