Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) behoort naast Johann Sebastian Bach en Georg Friedrich Händel tot de grote Duitse componisten uit de barok. Na verschillende posities in Leipzig en Frankfurt am Main werkte hij decennialang als muzikaal directeur van de vijf evangelisch-lutherse hoofdkerken in Hamburg.
Telemann kwam in 1701 naar Leipzig, in de vaste overtuiging (zo liet hij zijn moeder weten), rechten te gaan studeren. “Daarnaast” componeerde hij elke tweede week – afwisselend met Johann Kuhnau, de cantor van de Thomaskirche – cantates voor de Thomaskirche; richtte hij het studentenorkest “Collegium Musicum” op; was hij muzikaal leider van de opera en werd hij uiteindelijk in 1704 aangesteld als muzikaal directeur van de Neukirche. In 1705 ruilde hij Leipzig in voor Eisenach, waar hij in dienst trad aan het hof van Sorau. In 1721 vertrok hij naar Hamburg.
Ontevreden met zijn positie in Hamburg solliciteerde hij in 1722 naar het ambt van Thomascantor in Leipzig en werd unaniem gekozen door de gemeenteraad aldaar. De gemeente Hamburg verhoogde naar aanleiding van zijn ontslagverzoek het salaris van Telemann aanzienlijk, waarop hij besloot de baan in Leipzig af te wijzen. Nadat Christoph Graupner ook had geweigerd, werd de positie van Thomascantor uiteindelijk toebedeeld aan de “derde keus” – Johann Sebastian Bach.
