Kun je discussiëren in muziek? Jazeker: muziek is in wezen een oneindig gesprek tussen instrumenten en musici. In een soloconcert duelleren de solist en het begeleidende orkest. Aan het einde zijn er echter alleen maar winnaars! Hoe het allemaal begon lees je hier! Daarnaast kun je hier ook terecht voor een grote selectie bladmuziek van soloconcerten uit allerlei tijdperken!
Het woord “concerto” is afgeleid van het Latijnse begrip “concertare” (discussiëren). Deze term werd in eerste instantie gebruikt voor koormuziek met begeleidende bas. De eerste componisten die in de instrumentale vorm die wij tegenwoordig kennen als “concerto grosso” componeerden zijn de Italiaanse barokcomponisten Alessandro Stradella, Giuseppe Torelli en Arcangelo Corelli . Een concerto grosso is opgebouwd uit een kleine groep solisten (“concertino”), een groter begeleidend ensemble (“ripieno”) en basso continuo.
In de hoogbarok ontstaan de eerste instrumentale soloconcerten met een klassieke driedelige structuur, meestal echter nog steeds voor twee of meer instrumenten. Een grootmeester van deze vorm is Antonio Vivaldi. Van zijn hand zijn 447 concerten bewaard gebleven, waarvan 226 voor viool. Vivaldi’s bekendste concertante werk is het vioolconcert “De Vier Jaargetijden”. Vrijwel net zo bekend zijn ook de concerten van J. S. Bach en G. F. Händel.
Het soloconcert was ook een zeer geliefde vorm gedurende het classicisme (1750– 1800). Veel grote componisten die piano, of een ander instrument bespeelden schreven soloconcerten voor zichzelf en voor virtuoze instrumentalisten van hun tijd:
