Howard Shore leverde met zijn filmmuziek voor de met prijzen overladen “Lord of The Rings”- trilogie van Peter Jackson een echt meesterwerk af en kreeg er zelfs een Oscar voor. Naast de muziek voor “The Lord of The Rings” schreef hij ook de muziek voor “The Hobbit” - trilogie.
Volgens verschillende bronnen liet Howard Shore zich bij het schrijven van de filmmuziek voor “The Lord of The Rings ” inspireren door het “Leitmotiv” gebruik van Richard Wagner. Musicoloog Doug Adams maakte een uitgebreide analyse van de partituur en beschrijft alleen al voor “The Lord of the Rings” zo’n 90 verschillende (leid)motieven. Zo zijn er thema’s voor “de ring”, “Sauron”, “Mordor”, “Rivendell” en nog veel meer te ontdekken.
Aan de soundtrack voor de “The Lord of The Rings” en “The Hobbit” leverden ook verschillende popartiesten een bijdrage; Enya zong “May It Be”, Ed Sheeran “I See Fire” (The Desolation of Smaug) en Annie Lennox “Into the West” (geschreven door Howard Shore, Fran Walsh en Annie Lennox). Deze laatste won in 2003 de Oscar voor beste originele filmmuziek.
