Pinto’s surviving works include seven piano sonatas and some other music for the piano, four sonatas for violin and piano, nine duets for two unaccompanied violins, and sixteen songs. He is also known to have composed at least one violin concerto, now lost. Apart from one autograph fragment and one contemporary manuscript copy, the sole sources for this music are early 19th-century editions.
The Sonata in E flat minor transcribed and edited by Nicholas Temperley, is the first of two piano sonatas published as Op. 3, probably in 1803 and certainly not later than July of that year when they were reviewed in the Monthly Magazine. It is certain, therefore, that Pinto was not more than seventeen years old when he wrote them.
