Two flashy and mesmerizing piano duets, by British composer John Pitts.
Minimalist but funky in style, these two duets are a challenge for any two pianists in flashy fingerwork, tight focussed rhythm, and ensemble skill. "Changes for 20 nifty fingers" (1995), with its scary 14 vs 15 phasing rhythms, has been widely performed in concerts, festivals and competitions around Europe, and recorded on the album "Airs & Fantasias and other piano music by John Pitts", performed by Steven Kings and the composer.
"Additional Changes" (2019) is a new sequel or companion piece, using a similar 14/8 musical cell, but this time built on the notion of additive structure – a musical “I went to market and bought…” where the patterns repeat but are extended, with ever increasing complexity and thunder.
