This volume features fourteen character pieces composed in the early nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries. Included are songs without words, character pieces, and song-based compositions by Fanny Hensel (1805–47), the German-American composer Otto Dresel (1826–90), and the German-Israeli composer Hans Samuel (1901–76), as well as five solo piano arrangements by Clara Schumann (1819–96) of lieder by Robert Schumann. The pieces cover a range of difficulties and lengths and are suitable for pedagogical or concert use.
