The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. He left two pieces unfinished at the time of his death: Azulejos was completed by Enrique Granados, while Navarra was finished by Albéniz’s pupil, the French composer Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921), and published in 1912.
It was originally intended to form part of the Iberia Suite, but the composer gave up on it after declaring it to be "shamelessly cheap". Nevertheless, this work for solo Piano remains a worthwhile addition to the repertoire.
