Streichquartett e-Moll

In the first movement the dialogue between the violins and viola / violoncello dominates. Part II, Tema con variationi, provides a multiple changing between the instrumental parts. The composition flows into an impressive final part, the 'elegy for a friend'. The world premiere of the String Quartet in E minor took place on the 6th of November 1925 in the students’ dormitory at Wilhelmsplatz in Göttingen. One of the few women’s ensembles of the period performed: the Bentz-Quartet with Beatrice Bentz, Hilde Schirmer, Elisabeth Enthoven, and Lena von Hippel, who later married Hans Chemin-Petit.
